Student killed by a train as he fled cops who stopped him for smoking cannabis, inquest heard

A student was killed by a train after running away from two police officers who stopped him for smoking cannabis, an inquest heard.

Devante Keane, 20, wriggled out of his coat and ran into a garden before climbing a fence on to a railway line in November, 2013.

PC Elizabeth Hopkins spotted him from a bridge and told him to “get off the f***ing tracks”.

She added: “We could see him on the track. He was walking northbound towards Willesden.

“He wasn’t running he seemed fairly calm.”

Devante of Colchester, Essex, was later hit by a train in Willesden, North London.

Before his death, the student from Colchester, Essex had been stopped by police at around 4.20pm in Kilburn High Road on suspicion of possession of cannabis.
