It is not uncommon to walk into a gallery and view pieces that were created in honor of or while the artist was in an altered state. When you walk through the doors of the Oakland Museum of California’s exhibit Altered State, the first thing that greets you are four budding “The White” cannabis plants on loan from Dark Heart Nursery. If you’re looking for a trip down memory lane (think apple pipes and Half Baked) or conversations about the future (like taxation and environmental impacts), Altered State is your place.
September marks the end of the Oakland Museum of California’s exhibit Altered State, which explores the various identities marijuana has in our state. Exhibit sections feature many aspects of cannabis including medical marijuana, youth, spirituality, profit, the environment and policing to name a few.
