Legal marijuana has given rise to a bizarre syndrome that makes heavy cannabis users violently ill, US doctors warn.

Cannabinoid hypermesis syndrome triggers stomach pain and nausea. For unknown reasons, the debilitating symptoms can only be alleviated by hot baths.

Last year, a study found rates of CHS rocketed across the US between 2009 and 2015.

Now the lead authors have issued a fresh warning about the little-discussed illness since even more states have legalized the drug, making it available to patients in more than half the country.

‘It is certainly something that, before legalization, we almost never saw,’ Dr Kennon Heard, lead author of the study at the University of Denver, said.

‘Now we are seeing it quite frequently.’
